THE X-NATION ANNIVERSARY SHOW PLAYLIST - December 31, 2000

Radio has been a passion of mine since about the mid 1990's when I spent a year in Hawaii with NO TV to watch...not even the local stuff.  I was relegated to getting my entertainment from the radio, and the bug bit.  Before that, I had been chasing my career in television and film production.  But radio seemed to be an easier goal, and allowed me a lot more creative freedom.  So, I became a radio disc jockey.  I had started out on a little college station in North San Diego County called KKSM-AM 1320, which eminated from the campus of Palomar College.  I got started on the air in 1998, doing a shift on Thursday mornings.  It got my feet wet, and by the time the fall semester was closing down, I was given a chance to be on live during the break.  I jumped at the chance, having proven my worth with my "format show".  I was allowed to develop my OWN show...where I got to do what I wanted...and thus, on December 26th of 1998---The X-Nation was born.

Here we are, a few days removed from the show's 20th Anniversary, and I thought I'd share the program that was celebrating the show's 2nd Anniversary.  I had played with the format of the show off and on during it's time on the air (which ended in 2004), and I started incorporating new Alternative Rock into the playlist, trying to freshen it up for a modern age (and because I now worked IN the radio biz for a small company that housed 3 stations in its building, one of which was an alternative rock format station, KFSD-FM...or as well called it, Premium Radio 92/1) I wanted to stay current and hone my craft, because...well...I wanted to BE on the station.  So, I had tinkered the show to a more updated format, while still playing the classic music I had grown up with my whole life.  This was the end result.  I'm proud of all my college work, and I hope to one day share it with you.  Until then, enjoy the playlist, and see if you can find these songs to add to your library---you'll be glad you did.  As we depart 2018 and enter into 2019...a reflection back on a memorable---at least to ME, anyway---past. Thanks for checking out this blog, and if you haven't subscribed yet---PLEASE DO SO!  You'd make me one joyus dude!  And hey...tell all your friends!   Happy New Year, everyone!

THE EMPRESS OF 2018 - THE STORY OF ASUKA

THE EMPRESS OF 2018 - THE STORY OF ASUKA

I admit...I've been a wrestling fan pretty much my whole life.  Thanks in no part to my Pop, whom introduced me to it nearly 40 years ago.  I remember the stories he'd tell me of Freddie Blassie, John Tolos, Gordman & Goliath, Mil Mascaras, and many more that used to wrestle at the famous Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles under promoter Gene LaBelle.  Then, I'd go to the LA Sports Arena, and watch WWE wrestling with the likes of Bob Backlund, Sgt. Slaughter, The Masked Superstar, Hulk Hogan, Iron Shielk, The Magnificent Muraco, Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka, and many more.  I've stopped and started watching over the years due in part to life getting in the way, and my interest waning a little bit---but I'd always kept one foot in the door.

I remember well the whole "Attitude Era" of WWE with the likes of The Rock, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, D-Generation X, and a slew more, while the WCW brand had a villainous Hulk Hogan and his "nWo" faction.  It was a great time in the industry.  Then...it petered out for me again for awhile.  Within the last couple of years, I picked it up again, but this time---something was different.  Something NEW had been percolating underneath the surface of the whole era that had been left to women treated like "Divas", and things being a bit more "PG" to appeal to kids---now, WWE was a publicly traded company---had to clean up its act.  In doing so...and with much pressure from its female talent and the fans---we've finally gotten to see these women as athletes and performers, who're just as capable of delivering a show with the same quality as their male counterparts.  There was a developmental brand---NXT---the nurtured the next generation of superstars.  It was here that I found out about this woman from Osaka, Japan, who had cut her teeth on establishing a better brand of women's wrestling in her home country.  She wrestled around the world, and gained the accolades of many.  In 2015, she signed to WWE's NXT brand----the World Famous Kana had become---ASUKA.

Asuka made an immediate impact on NXT, by plowing through the Women's Division, and eventually, defeated the much beloved fan favorite, Bayley, and one of the brand's big "TakeOver" shows to become the Women's Champion.  She then went on a 523 day reign of terror, as she beat EVERYONE in her path. She had gotten the attention of WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, who wanted to bring her to the main roster, but Triple H---former World Champion and now head of NXT, refused because, as he put it, Asuka was the "anchor" of the brand.  SHE was the reason the brand was flourishing at that time.  But, in late 2017, Asuka relenquished her championship, and sought her future in the WWE...having no more challenges for her in NXT.

She made her debut in WWE at their "TLC" Pay Per View show in October of 2017, and from that moment on, she began to show the Women's Division of the Monday Night RAW brand exactly what she was made of.  In December, after the announcement by Stephanie McMahon that there would be a Women's Royal Rumble for that show's PPV---a first---in late January of 2018, "The Empress of Tomorrow" made her intentions known by announcing her entry into the match to then RAW Champion Alexa Bliss---who was one of TWO Champions (Charlotte Flair being the other for the Smackdown brand), that the winner got to choose from for a title match at that April's big show....Wrestlemania 34.  Asuka laid out the RAW Champion with a quick kick to the head, and sent her message loud and clear.

2018 has been a very up and down year for Asuka, but she has maintained her popularity with the fans, and most of all, kept relevant as one of THE premier women in the entire WWE---one that's dangerous, mysterious when she wants to be, fun, and knows how to give the fans what they want.  I'm completely enamored with this Superstar, and she is my favorite out of ANYONE in WWE.  So, we're going to look back at The Empress of Tomorrow's 2018 with a Top 5 list of her best moments:

5.  TIE:  Asuka announces her opponent for Wrestlemania 34/Ruins Carmella's "Mellabration" on Smackdown Live! -  NEVER let it be said that Asuka can't make an entrance and NOT have it make an immediate impact.  Two instances where she made the most of this in 2018 was when she had FINALLY---after a length of time where she had NOT announced who she'd be facing at Wrestlemania, she showed up at the Smackdown PPV Fastlane, after Charlotte Flair had successfully defended her championship against Ruby Riott, and didn't give the Champ much time to revel in her victory, as the Empress hit the ring, and shocked the crowd by pointing at the Wrestlemania sign, announcing that she had chosen The Queen as her opponent.

Eventually, Charlotte would defeat Asuka at Wrestlemania 34, ending the Empress' 914 day winning streak.  But, Charlotte also lost out the following night, as Carmella, who had been holding the Money in the Bank briefcase she had won more than half a year before, finally cashed in after Charlotte was taken down by a team called The IIconics, and Carmella became the new Women's Champion.  After defending it against Charlotte, and Charlotte was sidelined with an injury, Carmella boasted she was better than EVERYONE in WWE.  Smackdown General Manager Paige, thought that if that were the case, then she would easily be able to handle her NEW challenger at the Money in the Bank PPV.  During what would've been Carmella's "Mellabration" in jolly old England, guess who decided to spoil the party in spectacular fashion.  What was ESPECIALLY enjoyable was the "Asuka's gonna kill you!" chants eminating from the UK crowd.  The look of fear on Carmella's face was more than enough.

4.  Asuka vs. Sasha Banks, Monday Night RAW, January 29, 2018 - To say the match was---as Hall of Fame WWE broadcaster Jim Ross would call it--a "Slobberknocker" was an understatement, it was a testament as to how far women's wrestling has come.  Sasha Banks is one of the greatest workers in all of WWE.  She's willing to risk life and limb to be one of the best.  This match took place the night after the Royal Rumble, where both women endured a lot of punishment in that match.  Sasha herself had lasted nearly an hour in the match before being eliminated, and Asuka won the event.  Before Asuka was going to announce her opponent for Wrestlemania 34, she was interrupted by Banks, who declared she was "ready for Asuka".  The match SHOULD have main evented that night, but didn't.  Nonetheless, both women laid it on the line in what I consider to be one of the best matches out of ALL the women in 2018.  Both inflicted heavy punishment upon each other, as Banks nearly suffered a concussion due to a suicide dive that she came up short on as she dove through the ring ropes, allowing Asuka to clock her upside the head with a stiff kick, dropping the Legit Boss straight down.  Banks took MORE punishment, until she managed to have Asuka miss one of her hip attacks against the ropes, and Asuka took a nasty spill outside.  In the end, though, Asuka reversed Banks' finishing maneuver, The Banks Statement, into her own submission hold, the Asuka Lock, to score the victory.  It truly was an excellent match, and if they could get THESE two in the ring against each other again...look out!  You can have a match for the ages.

3.  Asuka destroys Charlotte Flair & Becky Lynch on Smackdown Live!, December 12, 2018 - A week prior to this edition of Smackdown Live!, Paige had set up a rematch between Charlotte and Becky for the title, but the other women in the locker room weren't having it, believing that THEY were getting shunned because of Charlotte's entitlements, even though she'd been thoroughly beaten by Becky Lynch at Evolution in a Last Woman Standing Match.  Paige decided that there would be a Battle Royal among the rest of the women on the roster to determine who would join Charlotte and Becky in what was going to become a Triple Threat Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match at said PPV event.  The Empress outlasted the field and was inserted into the title match.  4 days before the PPV, on the Smackdown Live! "go home" show, Charlotte and Asuka tangled in a match with Champion Becky Lynch sitting ringside to watch the action.  It was a fairly see-saw affair, with both women giving as good as they got, and taking their fair share of punishment.  However, late in the match, Asuka managed to get the Asuka Lock on Charlotte.  In desperation, Charlotte rolled them both out of the ring, only to get herself disqualified when she reached under the ring for a kendo stick, and---like she did to Ronda Rousey at Survivor Series---proceeded to whack Asuka with it.  Charlotte fell down from exhaustion, and "The Man" Becky Lynch looked down smugly at Charlotte, and started to walk away, mocking the former champ.  Seeing her walk away, Charlotte then attacked Lynch, who then gave it right back.  Eventually getting the kendo stick herself and laying a few licks on Charlotte for good measure.  However, Becky all but forgot The Empress of Tomorrow, as Asuka delivered a kick to the midsection, and tossed her over the announce table.  She then grabbed the kendo stick, and proceeded to put a severe beating on BOTH women before climbing up on the announce table and standing strong as the show went off the air.  After months of being treated as an afterthought....Asuka was back in the title hunt in a big, big way.

2.  Asuka wins the first ever Women's Royal Rumble:  January 28, 2018 - This was an historic event for WWE.  30 women from the past AND present would participate in the first ever all women's Royal Rumble match.  Of those 30, Asuka was the first to make her intentions known on Christmas Day by giving a swift kick to the head of Alexa Bliss.  The Empress entered the fray at #25, and wasted no time in taking care of business...including dispatching her former rival and (at the time) NXT Women's Champion, Ember Moon.  Asuka endured an onslaught from Sasha Banks and the Bella Twins before finally eliminating Nikki Bella by kicking her off the ring apron as both ladies battled outside of the ring in the waning moments of the match.  The Empress continued her domination and got the privilege of facing either Smackdown champion Charlotte Flair or RAW champion Alexa Bliss at Wrestlemania 34.  She, along with men's winner Shinskue Nakamura, were the first Japanese wrestlers to win a major match on a PPV of this magnitutde in WWE, with so much riding on the line.  The only thing that put a damper on Asuka's night...the arrival of Ronda Rousey at the end of the show.  This would NOT be the last time Rousey played a part in Asuka's future...

1.  Asuka wins the first ever Women's TLC Match Main Event, and becomes Smackdown Women's Champion:  December 16, 2018 - To say that the year had been one full of ups and downs for Asuka was an understatement.  Despite being very much over with the crowd, it seemed like championship gold was not in The Empress' immediate future.  That all changed when she earned a trip to TLC (Tables, Ladders, and Chairs) in mid December for a chance to become champion.  Facing both Champion Becky Lynch, who was looking to create her legacy as "The Man" atop WWE, and Charlotte Flair, looking to cement her own legacy by becoming the 8 time Women's Champion, thus breaking the record she currently holds with Hall of Famer Trish Stratus, Asuka had her work cut out for her.  This was a brutal affair, to say the least.  Every woman took a tremendous beating, while dishing one out on each other as well.  Asuka managed to get her licks in on Becky Lynch with the use of a kendo stick, powerbombed Charlotte through a table in the ring, but also took a vicious spear from The Queen into the timekeeper's area, taking her out of the action for a bit.  But just as Charlotte was about to reach the peak, Asuka came out of nowhere to battle back.  As her and Charlotte duked it out on top of the ladder, Lynch grabbed a separate ladder and climbed it herself.  Knocking Asuka to the mat, Charlotte proceeded to move to Becky's ladder, and it was on.  The two trading blows atop the ladder while trying to reach for the title, back and forth it went----then Rousey came down.  Not forgetting the armbar and beating she took at Lynch's hands on the RAW before Survivor Series, and the kendo stick beating she took from Charlotte AT Survivor Series, Ronda was looking for payback.  And while Lynch and Flair were obsessed with each other, Ronda came in, walked under the first ladder, and pushed the ladder the two combatants were on towards the ring rope, knocking them both off the ladder, onto the ropes themselves, thus taking them out of the match.  As Rousey walked up the ramp, Asuka realized she was all alone in the ring, and climb the ladder---and after all the hardship she endured in 2018---losing to Charlotte at Wrestlemania 34...having to get swindled by Carmella time and again with the help of James Ellsworth at Money in the Bank and Extreme Rules, thus denying her the title, then to be shuffled to the back while Becky Lynch ascended to the top of the heap, and claiming the championship...Asuka FINALLY achieved her goal and was now Smackdown Women's Champion.  The first Japanese women's champion in WWE since Bull Nakano back in the early 1990's.

It has been a pleasure to watch this woman wrestle week in and week out...giving everything she has to her art...to the fans.  Hopefully, WWE will notice that they have a unique treasure on their hands with her.  I've NEVER seen a wrestler like her before---and I never will again.  So, I hope that there is a nice long reign for The Empress of Tomorrow....because she rules TODAY.

Nobody is ready for ASUKA!!

MICHAEL HOWARD'S EXTRA SPECIAL CHRISTMAS PLAYLIST

Since all my show blogs are on hiatus for the holidays (though I'm not sure if IMPACT! Wrestling will be new the week after this week, but if you don't see a new blog, you'll know they're continuing with their "Best Matches of 2018" Show), it means it's time to find something to fill in here (don't want you guys LEAVING me now, do I?  Can't have you go away after I just GOT ya all here!).  And I can't think of anything better than sharing the love of music...or, in MY case, the joy I had playing Mr. Radio DJ and playing music both in college and professionally.  Now, back in my college days on KKSM-AM 1320 from Palomar College in San Marcos, Ca., I hosted my own show called "The X-Nation", where I played historian to the Modern Rock (Alternative for you newbies) Music.  One of the many themes I had on the show was, well, THEMES.  One of those themes was, of course, Christmas.  It gave me a chance to dig into the archives, play some holiday faves, some novelty stuff, and some tunes from alternative rock artists.  This particular show, which aired on Christmas Eve, 2000, was one of my favorites.  And for my gift to YOU (hey, I'm broke---it's all I can give ya!), is this playlist that you can go out, find these songs, and spring 'em on your friends!  So, I hope you guys have a GREAT Christmas, and relax with this gift of music from me to you.  So, crank up the volume, and sit by the fire, throw another yuletide log on it, and enjoy  a cup of nog.  Have a safe holiday, kids!

IMPACT! WRESTLING - December 13, 2018

REVIEW: IMPACT! WRESTLING – December 13, 2018:  More HOMECOMING build, Taya and Tessa Face off, Fenix & Santana lock horns, and Dark Allie and Kiera Hogan know their paths will cross, Brian Cage and Moose square off...

We’re only a few weeks out from HOMECOMING on January 6th, and things are beginning to heat up at IMPACT! Wrestling.  Taya Valkyrie and Tessa Blanchard have a face to face before their Knockouts Title Match, Kiera Hogan shares her thoughts on the betrayal of Dark Allie, two more qualifying matches for the Ultimate X Match, Fenix and Santana from LAX go toe to toe in a 1 on 1 match prior to their tag team championship match at the PPV as well…

Back again in Las Vegas, and we have Rich Swann facing off against Dave Crist in another Ultimate X qualifying match.  Crist, of course, escorted to the ring with the rest of oVe.  Crist gets the offense early, and sends Swann out of the ring, where Jake takes advantage of a distraction to slam Swann on the ring apron.  Swann answers back with a kick to Crist on the apron to send him off the ring.  Swann then lands a flip suicide dive onto oVe.  Swann gets on the offense.  Lands a springboard, but only gets a 2 count.  Goes for the Phoenix Splash, but Crist moves.  Just as Crist goes to get on the attack, Swann surprises him with a rollup and the pin.  Swann advances.  The Crists attack Swann, but Callahan breaks it up and scolds them.  Just then, Willie Mack comes down to the ring, and pounds on Willie Mack.  Swann pulls him away.  Swann holds Mack back as oVe hold Callahan back.  oVe bails the ring.

Backstage, Moose is interviewed by McKenzie.  He’s not worried about Eddie Edwards, but he’s got a match with Brian Cage.  Moose tells him that machines die, but legends live forever.

We see Swann and Mack arguing backstage, and Mack wants to know WHY Swann held him off, and Swann said that he’s been down the path with Sami Callahan, and he urges Moose to NOT go down that path with him.

Josh Matthews is in the ring, and he calls out Knockouts Championship challenger Taya Valkyrie.  Wera Loca chants eminate from the crowd.  Then, Matthews calls out Knockouts Champion Tessa Blanchard.  It’s time for their final face to face before they square off at HOMECOMING.  Taya talks about all the dirty actions Tessa pulled in order to hold onto her championship.  Taya says that Tessa has no respect for authority, and that’s not how a champion should act.  And she plans on beating Tessa’s ass at the PPV.  Tessa responds by asking Taya how does a champion act?  She wouldn’t know, she’s just riding her husband Johnny Impact’s coattails.  She calls Taya a loser, just like all the fans.  She says what she does, because she IS a champion.  Tessa says at HOMECOMING, Taya will have to TAKE the title from her.  Matthews tries to keep the peace.  Matthews says that because of how their matches have gone, he says that IMPACT management put forth a special stipulation…a special guest referee….it’s GAIL KIM!  Tessa is pissed.  Taya couldn’t be more pleased.

Tessa is backstage griping and complaining about the stipulation that Gail Kim is the guest referee.  She says she respects Gail Kim, but she says she won’t be afraid to run through Gail if she gets in her way.

Another Ultimate X qualifying match features Trevor Lee facing off against the Razcals’ Trey Miguel.  This is the final qualifying match for the Ultimate X match.  Match starts off with some pretty simplistic chain wrestling and counters.  Miguel lands a hurricanrada to flip Lee over, then manages to avoid any counters from Lee, as he goes out of the ring.  Miguel goes for a suicide dive, but pulls back at the last minute as Lee avoids it, but Miguel stopped on the ring apron, delivers another hurricanrada outside the ring.  Lee gets the offense back, and Lee goes to work on Miguel.  Trevor has Miguel in a backbreaker, but the hold is broken, and Lee screams at Miguel.  Miguel counters, gets a strike, then lands a kick and lands a neckbreaker, but Lee kicks out of the pin attempt.  Miguel gets Lee on the turnbuckle and delivers a 619 like kick, then lands another hurricanrada, and scores the pinfall.  Trey is heading to Ulitmate X where he’ll face Rich Swann, Jake Crist, and Ethan Page.

We get a promo from the Lucha Bros. about their upcoming match against LAX for the IMPACT Tag Titles on January 6th, and Fenix then tells Santana he’s going down tonight.
Dark Allie and Su Yung are telling Kiera Hogan that her time has come, and that there is no turning back for Allie.  Su says Kiera’s time has come.

LAX backstage with Konnan.  Konnan is upset with LAX, because he told them that their egos got the better of them, and now things have escalated.  Konnan says they’re going to have to face the Lucha Bros. on their own, he’s out.  They’re shocked, but Santana said they can do it on their own…and he says he can take care of Fenix on his own.

Santana of LAX and Fenix of the Lucha Bros. are ready to face off in a one on one match tonight.  We get some early lucha skills from both men, showing off what they can do.  A hurricanrada from Santana lands Fenix outside, he tries to get back in, but gets kicked in the face.  Santana goes out to grab him, and Fenix kicks him on the ring apron, lands a forearms to the face, and climbs back into the ring.  Santana outside, and Fenix lands a moonsault on the outside.  Fenix misses a swanton bomb, Santana nails him, but only gets a 2 count.  Fenix goes for a move that gets countered by Santana with a urinagi, but Santana only gets a 2 count.  Fenix on the outside, and Santana goes for him, but he stops short, Fenix kicks him.  They trade shots back and forth, then Santana nails a brutal reverse hurricanrada, but Fenix turns around and delivers one of his own.  Trading blows back and forth, both men deliver kicks to each other.  Santana goes to jump onto Fenix with the rope, but gets caught in the ropes, and Fenix walks across the rope Undertaker style and delivers a nasty kick.  Tries for the pin, but can’t get it.  Trading sitting powerbombs but no one can get the pin on the other.  A LOT of high spots in this match.  Fenix has Santana on the top rope, and goes for a back slam, but Santana counters into a pin attempt, but Fenix kicks out.  Santana is tossed into the corner, and Fenix delivers a back kick to Santana.  He then manages to roll up Santana for the pin and the win.  Both teams stand in the ring in a staredown as they know what’s coming up January 6th.  Pretty decent match.  Too bad the crowd has been dead pretty much the whole night.  Vegas is NOT really a place for a wrestling show---they have no appreciation for it.

McKenzie is with Killer Kross, and asks him why he saved Taya Valkyrie last week.  Is he on Impact’s side?  Kross tells her to zip it, and says that everyone wants him to spell it out.  He says that he offered the champ a chance to have help his side, and toughen him up for the match ahead.  At this point, the champ comes out and gets in Kross’ face.  Tells him to stay away from him and Taya.  Kross goads Johnny, and Johnny pushes him into the backstage equipment, and warns him to back off.  Kross says that’s what Johnny needs to win at HOMECOMING.

Kiera Hogan talks about how she’d have Allie’s back during this whole Su Yung saga, but now that she’s turned to the dark side, the end has come, and Kiera is ready to face Dark Allie at HOMECOMING.

We head back to the Sanitarium, where we see Eddie Edwards and Raven talking.  Eli Drake shows up and has a sit down with the “head of the snake”.  Eli says that he’s the last of a dying breed, because of people like Raven who inspired the hardcore era.  He plans on wiping it out once he takes care of Abyss at the Monster’s Ball Match at HOMECOMING.  He gets worked up and threatens Raven more, and Raven calls for the orderlies to come and get Eli, which they do.

Katerina comes out with her new protégé’, Ruby Raze, to do battle with new Knockouts sensation Jordynne Grace.  This is strength vs. strength, and an all power match.  Grace and Raze trade blows early.  Jordynne shows off some agility, then lands a vicious elbow to the face of Ruby Raze.  Ruby comes back with a german suplex, and goes to work on Grace.  Katerina offers some outside interference as she chokes Grace on the ropes.  Raze with a suplex with Grace’s feet on the ropes.  Grace gets up, and gets in Raze’s face, asks her if that’s all she got.  Raze gets her in a choke hold, but Grace brakes it, and lands some blows to Raze.  Grace goes to lift her, but Raze blocks it.  Raze goes to the op but Grace lifts her up into a powerbomb.  Katerina goes to interfere, but Grace catches her, and delivers a muscle buster, and then Grace lands a Vader Bomb from the top rope to score the pin.  Katerina’s ringer fails.  Jordynne Grace continues to impress.  She is going to be a factor in the Knockouts title picture quicker than you think.

Gama Singh and the Desi Hit Squad are in a hotel hallway looking for Scarlett Bordeaux when she shows up, and they feel they’re next on the list to obtain Scarlett’s services.  She tells them to go out and try to impress her, and she walks off.

Main Event time as “The Machine” Brian Cage takes on Moose.  Both men are powerful, but Cage is very agile for a big man.  Both men trade blows, and Cage gets a quick hurricanrada that sends Moose out of the ring.  They both trade blows outside the ring.  Moose goes for a chop with Cage against the ringpost, and Cage moves, with Moose slamming his hand against the post.  He keeps trying to chop Cage with the injured hand.  But he still remains on the offense, sending Cage into the barrier, and delivering a big boot.  Moose goes for another kick, but Cage manages to lift up Moose, and slam him on the ring apron.  The action moves back into the ring, and Cage tries to mount some offense, but Moose keeps the edge on.  He knees Cage in the back of the head.  Moose is taking his time, delivering more chops with the injured and.  Moose drives Cage into the corner, and Cage hits harshly.  Moose has dominated this match thus far.  Moose again takes his time, goes to deliver a blow to Cage, but Cage lifts the knee to block it, and stuns Moose….Cage rolls out of the ring, and Moose rolls out after him and continues to work him over.  Moose starts jaw jacking with the crowd in the front row.  He throws Cage into the ring, and as he’s distracted with the crowd, Cage lands a flip dive on Moose on the outside.  He gets Moose back into the ring, and lands a powerslam, but can’t get a pin.  Back and forth the two men go.  Cage gets on top of the turnbuckle, but Moose nabs him and hits a sitting powerbomb.  Then he lands a senton off the ropes, but only gets a 2 count.  Moose goes to the outside, and Cage delivers a high kick.  He then manages to suplex the big man into the ring, but only gets a two count. Cage goes for another move, but Moose bites him to reverse it.

Moose with more chops with the hurt hand, and they continue to trade blows.  Moose with a clothesline, but Cage counters with a discus clothesline, and Cage is clutching his wrist.  A couple of reversals, and delivers a powerbomb, but can’t get a pin.  Cage rolls out of the ring…he’s hurt.  Moose rolls out, and looks to powerbomb or piledrive Cage when all of the sudden, Eddie Edwards in a hospital gown appears and attacks Moose.  The match is over, and Cage Is DQ’ed.  Eddie Edwards continues the attack on Moose, landing a suicide dive on him.  Eddie slams Moose into the ringpost, and lands another suicide dive.  The crowds chant Eddie’s name.  He looks under the ring, and he grabs his kendo stick.  He attacks Moose with the kendo stick, and works him over.  Eddie goes to land a powerbomb on Moose, but Moose breaks it up, and runs up the ramp to escape.  The Show ends with Eddie doing snow angels in the ring.

_________________________________________________________________________

I guess, technically, you COULD call this a “go-home” show, since the next two weeks’ worth of IMPACT! Shows will be the “Best of 2018”.  It was an alright show…especially for a company that has had to pretty much rebuild from the ground up after all the financial and backstage politics it’s had to suffer through the last few years.  I will say this:  they’re making a genuine effort, and putting their best foot forward.  But the 10 pm start time is killing them, and it reflects in the ratings.  They have quality stars on the show, but very few standouts than can be the face of the company and run with it.  Plus, with the iffyness of their television contract with POP up in the air, the company is taking on water at an alarming rate, and I feel bad for the talent that is busting their ass to give the fans a good wrestling alternative to WWE.

The storylines on the show are not bad….they’re consistent compared to the huge mess you see on Monday Night RAW every week, and often times on Smackdown Live!  But again, some people are just not connecting with them.  Now, I can be cynical about the product---I’ve been a wrestling fan for 40 years, and I’d like to think I know the difference between a good and bad wrestling show.  IMPACT isn’t bad…but it still has a bit of work to do in order to get on a level where it can compete with the likes of WWE…though not many can.  I think IMPACT! Wrestling has an advantage in that they have an open door policy with the likes of House of Glory, Ring of Honor, New Japan, and various other indies where talent can be pooled and shared.  I feel that’s an advantage for them, and it also lifts the entire industry as a whole.  They just need to better trust their talent, nurture them, and promote the living hell out of them.  If they can get BACK into a more favorable primetime slot, it WILL work to their advantage in the long run---as long as you can tell compelling stories, and deliver a more action packed product than what we’re getting with WWE.  The main problem is finding a home that will support them through good AND bad, and be willing to PROMOTE the program on their network.

Either way, getting back to tonight’s show, the highlights (for ME, anyway), was the match between Santana and Fenix.  It was a game of one-upsmanship between the two, but proved that both men can go in the ring, and deliver a high quality match.  It’s also the one time the crowd in Vegas actually got into the show (I tell you, Vegas crowds SUCK for wrestling.  After what happened at the end of Smackdown Live!  Tuesday night…I thought we’d get more, but they just have NO appreciation for wrestling).  But the match was excellent, and BOTH these guys are quality stars.  This was just a taste of what we can expect once we see both teams in the ring January 6th for HOMECOMING.  This just might be THE match on the entire card.  One question remains….what will Konnan do?  Will he show up at the PPV, or will he just bail on the boys completely, and let ‘em tear each other up?  Either way, I’m excited to see this match.

One of THE best storylines on the show is Tessa and Taya.  Taya is not the world’s best promo, but she gets the point across, and the fans like her.  Tessa is perfect as the snotty, self-entitled heel that she is.  She has taken SEVERAL pages out of dear old Dad’s playbook, and used them perfectly.  She has been terrific for this division, and the match between her and Taya should be pretty damn good.  Now add the stipulation of Gail Kim as the guest referee, and it’s going to make the outcome of this match very interesting.  Gail has been retired for months now…could this match—if Tessa decides to pull the dirty tricks out and be the chickenshit heel we know her to be, haul off and drop Gail…will that prompt a title change in the match, or will this have Gail come out of retirement to go toe to toe with Tessa?  Possibilities are there.

The Ultimate X match should be a fun one, with Rich Swann, Trey Miguel, Ethan Page, and Jake Crist.  Miguel impressed me with his solo effort tonight.  If they can lay off the dumb promos for the Razcals and let them do their business in the ring---they can be future tag champs.  But for now, I’d like to see how Trey will handle himself against more experienced guys in the ring.  Swann is going to be the heave favorite in this match, and it’s good to see him get a chance to hold some gold in this company.

Scarlett Bordeaux and the Desi Hit Squad?  Waste of 3 or so minutes of airtime.  When is her search going to end?  Kind of dragging on long enough.  Yeah, she’s great eye candy, but what the hell are they doing with her?

Eddie Edwards’ attack on Moose was expected at some point, considering he broke out of the Sanitarium.  No Holds Barred had to be the only way to go to give these guys a blowoff match at the PPV.  A side note to tonight’s match:  Moose looked dominant over Cage…not exactly what you need for your IMPACT! Championship challenger going into the PPV.

We also knew that after last week’s attack on her, Kiera and Dark Allie were destined for a match at the PPV as well.  Question is:  will Rosemary return to help Kiera against Dark Allie and Su Yung?  Because for ME…this story has to have an ending at some point in 2019.  The payoff HAS to be a match between Dark Allie and Rosemary, and a Rosemary/Su Yung match where Rosemary gets her revenge.  Rosemary has tweeted about a “Dark War” coming, so hoping to see that happen in the coming year.

Eli Drake…the man is such an excellent promo, no matter where he’s at or what he’s doing.  I’ve been happier with him lately.  Now that I know what his direction is---to eliminate all the hardcore legends---makes more sense to me.

“Thick Mama Pump” Jordynne Grace is the real freakin’ deal.  The woman has immense power and agility.  I feel that Katerina isn’t quite done with her yet, and I DO like that there’s more than one story going on with the Knockouts, plus, it lets them build up Jordynne as a threat to the division.  She WILL be in the title hunt sooner than anyone thinks.

Speaking of the Championship match---Killer Kross is going to play a HUGE factor in the outcome of that match.  Now, whether he causes one man to win or the other, or simply just destroys them both at the PPV remains to be seen.  But we DO know he’s not done being a thorn in Johnny’s side.  And Johnny doesn’t like it.

In the end---this show was serviceable, moved various storylines along, and gave us a few more twists and turns for the PPV.   Probably in the next week or so, I will be giving my predictions on HOMECOMING, and sort out what will happen next.  The show was decent, didn’t have too many ridiculous promos and segments, and gave us a couple of good matches tonight.  But again, as I mentioned, there are still many things to grow upon for the company, and if they can just get their feet level under them, and find some security as far as a TV deal, and a better time slot, I feel they have a chance to improve.  But someone has GOT to have faith in them…and they have to have everyone involved to step up their game even more.  I know there’s talent there, but they have to crank it past 11 now.  Their future….IMPACT’S future….rides on it.

So...with the new additions to the PPV...the show is looking like this:

IMPACT! WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP:  Brian Cage v. Johnny Impact (C)
IMPACT! TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP:  Lucha Bros. v. LAX (C)
KNOCKOUTS DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP:  Taya Valkyrie v. Tessa Blanchard (C) WITH *SPECIAL GUEST REFEREE:  Gail Kim
ULTIMATE X MATCH (X-DIVISION TITLE MATCH): Ethan Page v. Rich Swann v. Jake Crist v. Trey Miguel
MONSTER'S BALL MATCH:  Eli Drake v. Abyss
NO HOLDS BARRED MATCH:  Eddie Edwards v. Moose
Kiera Hogan v. Dark Allie (w/Su Yung)

I am not sure I’ll cover the year in review shows.  I may spend time making my predictions for the HOMECOMING card, and possibly giving my take on what IMPACT can do to improve in 2019.  Either way, keep checking back here, and I thank you guys for following me and this blog.  Please subscribe if you haven’t, and pass it along, I’d appreciate it.  Also, don’t be afraid to leave your comments, would love to read ‘em.  I’m curious as to what YOUR guys’ ideas would be for IMPACT for 2019.

If I don’t see you soon, I hope you guys have a tremendous holiday season.  Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and all of that.

Until next time!

SUPERGIRL - Season 4.9

REVIEW: SUPERGIRL – SEASON 4, EPISODE 9: “Elseworlds Part 3”

This year’s crossover event, Elseworlds, has seen our favorite heroes, Barry and Ollie, and switched them up with each other, had the appearance of a planetary intrepid reporter, the current guardian of Gotham City, and the destruction of a world that was once the home of A Fastest Man Alive.  And now, The Monitor’s plan to test the mettle of our group have Barry and Ollie on the run with a more menacing looking Man of Steel looking to clampdown on them…

We have a John Deegan intro to the last chapter of the crossover, where we discover that Deegan has  turned himself into Superman.  We open up to see Deegan capturing Barry and Oliver.  They find out Deegan has turned himself into Superman.  He says he’s changed the world, and their family and friends.  He says that the world is his.  At that point, Ollie shoots a crane that’s loose, and ends up telling Deegan that if he wants to be a hero, he either saves the people or stops them.  Deegan saves the people, and Ollie and Barry escape.  Back at STAR Labs, Deegan is upset that they got away.  Team Flash and Arrow are now a part of Deegan’s team.  They tell him that he will recapture them.  He ends up visiting Kara, whose powers have been dampened in the pipeline.  He says the Book of Destiny mentions nothing of Clark or Kara at all, as if they don’t exist.  She goads him a little, but he uses a sonic scream on her to remind her she’s helpless.  He says he scrambled everyone’s brains here, including Alex’s, and that he is what the world needs.  And he’ll end up killing all of them when he’s done.  Kara calls him a murderer, he’s quick to correct her, and says he’s Superman.

Barry and Oliver are on the lam, but get transported to a realm, and come face to face with the Monitor.  He tells them it’s time to discuss their destinies.

Face to face with The Monitor, he is impressed with how they managed to outwit Deegan as Superman.  Ollie asks that if they’re being tested, let them get back to it.  The Monitor asks Ollie if he’s willing to die.  He informs them that they will need to tap into everything they have to stop the world as it is from being destroyed.  Barry and Ollie are transported back to Earth, where they try to find their allies.  They head to a biker bar, where they meet up with Gary, who’s a fan of theirs.  Gary leads them to Cisco, where he’s the big boss of the gang there.  They looking for his help, but he tells them they have no pull here, and calls upon Jimmy Olsen to teach them a lesson.

Back in the pipeline, Kara tries to reason with Alex, but to no avail.

Cisco reminds them that he likes to see his men beat on people.  Ollie and Barry get beat up.  Just as Cisco wants Jimmy to toss them outside.  Barry reminds Cisco that he knew his brother Dante.  Cisco halts their departure.  He wants to hear more, so Barry asks him if he can still breach.  Cisco reminds him that’s how he robbed all those banks.  Barry tells him he’ll teach him how to breach to another world, which intrigues Cisco.  He ends up breaching them to Earth 38, where they meet Superman and Lois at the Fortress of Solitude.  They inform him that Kara is in trouble, as well as the rest of the Earth.

Back on Earth 1, Alex is in the pipeline doing some work, when Caitlin comes in and tells her to go home.  They have a little personal chat about Alex’s life, and Alex brushes it off, and continues to work.  Kara tries to use her super breath to get out of the cell, but Alex turns on the sonic weapon.  Kara starts speaking in Kryptonian, which gets Alex’s attention.  Kara starts appealing to Alex, letting her know about the Alex on her Earth.  About everything Alex has accomplished.  Kara says that if Alex let’s her out, she’ll be able to stop Superman.  While back at the Fortress, Ollie, Barry, and Superman discuss how to get the Book of Destiny back to fix reality.  They know Deegan would keep it someplace secure.  Clark reminds them that using the Book comes at a sacrifice.  Cisco says that they probably keep that book at STAR Labs.  They breach out to Earth 1.  As Alex and Kara make their escape, they’re caught by Deegan and Killer Frost.  Just as they’re about ready to be killed, Superman, Barry, Ollie, and Cisco appear, ready to do battle.

Superman and Deegan take off into battle, Ollie goes after Diggle, and tells Barry to get the book.  Barry, Alex, and Kara take off towards the Fortress of Solitude to retrieve the Book.  Superman and Deegan battle all over Central City.  Deegan gets the upperhand, and someone shouts out at Clark that he’s “Bizarro”.  Deegan asks Superman how he likes to be the villain for once.  Back in the secret room at STAR Labs, Barry, Kara, and Alex find the book, but Kara is too weak to use it.  She gets it to Clark, and Clark starts using it to set reality right.  Ollie is back to being Ollie, and Barry is back to being Barry.  They are transported to where Clark is, and Deegan gets the jump on Barry.  He threatens to kill Barry if Superman doesn’t drop the book.  Ollie points an arrow at Deegan, threatening to kill him, but Barry tells him not to.  Maybe that is the Monitor’s test---to have Ollie NOT kill.  Ollie relents, and Deegan pushes Barry away, swats his hands together to create a sonic boom, and distracts everyone enough to retrieve the book and take off.

Alex and Kara have one last chat, before reality starts getting rewritten.  Barry suggests he and Kara run at Mach 7 to counteract the Earth’s rotation.  Superman says that if they do that, as he forsaw in the book…they’ll die.  As they take off, Ollie says he’s got an idea, he tells Superman to get the book.  Ollie takes off and calls out the Monitor.  Back in the Monitor’s realm, Ollie says he’s not impressed.  The Monitor says that Ollie has a lot of hubris to call out a God.  Ollie says that Kara and Barry are the best of them all.   That his true self is dark, but that for a God who is looking for people to battle a great evil, he’s not done a very good job.  The Monitor says that one sacrifice deserves another.

Superman finds Deegan, and prepares to battle him.  Deegan brings in a giant robot to battle Superman, and just then, J’Onn, Lois, and Briany appear.  Lois uses a weapon from the Fortress to distract Deegan, while J’Onn and Brainy tackle the robot.  Clark reaches for the Book, but Deegan reaches it first, and uses it on Clark.  Lois gets zapped along the way, and Clark goes to save her.

Barry and Kara continue to race, and as they begin to start burning up and fading out, time slows down.  Ollie reappears, and shoots Deegan.  He drops the book and reality restores itself.  Barry and Kara doesn’t disappear.  Deegan morphs into some alien looking being.  The day is saved.

Everyone says their goodbyes at STAR Labs, and Clark, Kara, Lois, J’Onn, and Brainy return home.  On the Smallville farm, Kara is told by Clark that she doesn’t need to be with the DEO in order to be a hero.  He lets her know that he’s going to be gone for awhile.  Lois informs Kara that she’s pregnant.  Kara is happy for them both.  Clark informs her that they’re going to be on Argo for awhile, but he knows the world will be in good hands with Supergirl around.

At the Fortress, Clark finally proposes to Lois.  Back on Earth 1, Barry and Ollie share a drink, and commiserate over being each other.  They come to a mutual understanding.  Ollie then gets a call from Batwoman, who says that Deegan has made a friend in Arkham---Psycho Pirate!  And he lays the tagline for next season’s crossover:  “Worlds will live.  World’s will die.  The universe will never be the same!”.  It’s going to be here:  CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS!

_________________________________________________________________________________

Another crossover in the books, and they just seem to get more epic with each story.  This story had a MUCH better flow than last year, and with only THREE of the shows participating, it made for an easier transition from one show to another.  Loved the Barry Green Arrow intro from the previous night's Arrow installment, to Deegan's faux Superman intro on tonight's edition of The Girl of Steel.  The story moved along fast, didn't bog down, and we got A LOT of easter eggs in the process.  I did have some things that I wasn't happy about, but that was just me uber-geeking about wanting MORE.  But, for what it was worth----I couldn't have been more pleased heading into the winter break with what we got.

This crossover gave us the focal points of our two main heroes---Barry and Ollie---and put them in situations unfamiliar:  each others' lives.  It really gave both of them a chance to see how the other operates, WHY the operate and act the way they do, and how they effect the relationships around them.  It was also the best teamwork that both of them have EVER had, having to rely not only on teaching each other HOW to use their respective abilities, but in the fact BOTH showed quality leadership, and thinking on the fly, working off one another to survive.  At the end, Barry and Ollie now have an even deeper understanding of one another, and a much more mutual respect.  Their friendship has grown leaps and bounds from this.  I think it will serve them well down the road as the shows pick up for the 2nd half.

To see Lois and Clark FINALLY was just perfect.  Both Tyler Hochelin and Bitsie Tulloch have NAILED this relationship down.  There was instant chemistry, and Bitsie herself has got Lois nailed down brilliantly.  She gives off that Margot Kidder esque feel, with and Erica Durance attitude---two women whom I feel really defined Lois not only for back in the day...but in the modern times as well.  If we could have another Superman show with THESE two...sign me the hell up!  And with Jon Cryer coming aboard as Lex Luthor before it's all said and done this season...I expect a return of Lois and Clark before too long....with Junior Kent in tow (if they follow the comics, Lois and Clark have a boy).  Either way, it's been an amazing take on the World's Finest Couple in the DC Universe (and I second Barry and Iris after that).  It was also sweet to have those Clark and Kara moments, with Clark giving full confidence in Kara's ability to hold down the fort while he's on Argo with Lois.  He FINALLY gave the audience the very thing I had been questioning all season, if not before:  there has been NO REASON for Kara to be under the thumb of ANY government!  Supergirl is there for the WORLD, and shouldn't have to take orders from ANYONE.  So grateful Clark finally pointed that out to her.  And she'll be needed---A LOT.  With Superman gone, Supergirl is gonna have to pick up the slack in Metropolis (which I wouldn't mind seeing some of on this show).  Give us a reason for us to see Perry White, and anyone else related to the Superman mythos (maybe an appearance by Intergang or something).

Was also good to know that, no matter the universe or reality, Kara and Alex are joined at the hip, and the sisterhood will always be there.  It was the one thing that helped turned the tide for the good guys in this series.  As much as Kara feels like she let Alex down, she also believes in Alex enough to do what's right.

Wasn't it cool to see variations on our intrepid heroes?  Nice to see Killer Frost rockin' a new look, being her sassy self, but also Cisco as some badass crime boss?  Diggle is a soldier, as always, and we got a tough walking, trash talking James Olsen.  What bummed me OUT was John Wesley Shipp's BRIEF appearance as The Flash from Earth 90.  I was SO hoping he'd play more of a part in helping save the day from Deegan, but they disposed of him quick.  I was expecting more.  Also...was anyone else BESIDES me a little bummed we didn't get to see Lois Lane interact with Iris West?  Or the rest of Team's Flash and Arrow?  That would've been cool.  Hopefully, we'll get a chance next year.  Batwoman's final appearance won't hopefully be her last, and we'll see more of her soon.

This crossover, overall, set us up QUITE nicely for what I feel the Arrowverse and DC have been cruising towards all along:  Crisis on Infinite Earths.  We knew it was coming at some point, but now all the pieces are on the board with the exception of the "Big Bad"...The Anti-Monitor....and there's no doubt he'll kick it off.  Now...how they managed to cram everything that happened in a 12 issue mini series in the comics into 3 episodes (4 if you count Legends), because with this being THE premier event---EVERYONE is going to be involved.  And we have a good year to speculate who will live or die, and---if they follow the comic---will they streamline the Arrowverse onto ONE world?  Let the speculating begin.  I just hope that when it comes down to next year----Marv Wolfman & George Perez (who wrote and pencilled the series, respectively), get some credit for it---this was their baby back in 1985---I'd like to see them get some love.  And here's another monkey wrench to throw in:  Will it expand to include the worlds of Titans and Black Lightning?   I know we ALL have sooooo many questions!

Alrighty, I've blogged your eyes off long enough.  We're on a quick hiatus from our Maid of Might until Mid January, so enjoy the break, catch your breath, and we will all head back here when the show picks up again with the ongoing storyline of the Agent of Liberty, as well as the Red Daughter story that's still floating out there.  As always, I can't thank you all enough for viewing the blog.  Do feel free to subscribe, tell everyone within earshot about it, and please feel free to leave comments.  I'd love to hear YOUR guys' thoughts on everything.

Happy Holidays, Happy New Year, and hoping for a fun 2019!

Until Mid January, gang----Up, Up, and Away!

COMIC BOOK OF THE WEEK

COMIC BOOK OF THE WEEK Hello, True Believers (thanks, Stan!)!  Once again, our comic shop is open, and THIS week, we go into our Marvel bin ...
