DC'S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW - Season 4.13

DC’S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW – Season 4, Ep. 13:  “Egg MacGruffin”

Our weird and wonderful time travelling crew have certainly had to deal with A LOT of mystical creatures this season, and having to face their NEW big bad, the demon Neron.  So far, he took possession of Constantine’s boyfriend Dez, tried to seduce Nora Dhark to his side, and now, has possessed Ray Palmer.  On top of that, Sara and Ava are still working out THEIR relationship woes, Zari and Nate try to see if they have the spark…meanwhile, Mick is dealing with the Rom-Com coming up…and it’s his pseudonym that is requested.  On top of that…there IS some time travelling involved in this episode.

We kick our show off in the Arctic Wastelands back in 1933, as an archaeologist and his assistant discover something gold inside a block of ice.

We flash forward to 2019, where we see Zari and Nate bring in a mummy, and proceed to make corny mummy jokes.  It’s obvious, however, that the two are flirting.  Something that is picked up on by Sara.  Sara catches up to Zari to discuss her and Nate, and Sara tells her to just go for it.  Ava catches up to Sara to remind her about their book club.  Sara looks thrilled.

We see Mona reading to the still comatose Nora one of Mick’s books.  Ray comes in to check on her, and after Mona leaves, Neron tries to take control of Ray to get him to suffocate her with a pillow.  Ray fights him off, and wonders what’s going on with him.  It’s then that Neron reveals himself to Ray, and says that he will make Ray kill someone he loves, so that he can have his soul.

Mick is looking at a letter he got, which turns out to be an invitation to a Rom-Com where he’ll get $25 thousand for the appearance…or, rather, REBECCA SILVER will get paid.  Mick is hesitant until Charlie stumbles upon him, and says it sounds good, but the problem is, she doesn’t exist.  Charlie offers up herself to play the role of “Rebecca Silver”.  Mick’s on board.

Sara is about ready to crack open the book for the book club meeting until she gets a time anomaly alert.  They find out about some gold egg that’s discovered in 1933, and she decides to send Nate and Zari to lead the mission.  Ava inquires what’s going on, and Sara tells her that Nate and Zari got the hots for each other.  Ava doesn’t believe it, and they make a wager.  Meanwhile, Zari and Nate try to rally some of the crew to go on the mission.  Ray is preoccupied, obviously, and Charlie is tagging along with Mick to his Rom-Com.  They’re totally alone on this one.

So Nate and Zari travel back to 1933, where they’re given the names of Marion and Henry Jones (yes…Marion and Indy, kids).  They decide to make the best of it, and still accomplish the mission.  They stumble into an Adventurers’ Club.  A good lead to start their search.

Back in Seattle in 2019, it’s the site of the Romance Con.  There, Mick is going over with Charlie on how to look, and what to answer at the Q&A.

Sara is in her quarters trying to break open the book, but obviously can’t sit still and read it.  So, next we see her working out as she’s listening to the audiobook.

In 1933, we see a Gordon Gilchrist address the Adventurer’s Club, and show off this golden egg, which grabs everyone’s attention.  Nate and Zari feel they’ve discovered their mystery.  They’re off to recover the egg.

Neron is still toying with Ray, trying to get him to give up and let him take over.  Ray continues to fight back, and then Gary stumbles in.  Gary, after several failed attempts at guessing, realizes that Ray is possessed.

Back to 1933, Nate and Zari discover the room the golden egg has been placed in, and they decide to nab it.  However, before Zari goes for it, Nate holds her back, telling her the place is booby-trapped.  He gets through the trap, and they get to the egg…only to discover it’s a fake.

Mick is still trying to teach Charlie about how to “act” like “Rebecca Silver”.  As he describes “her” to Charlie, she realizes he reads his own fanmail.  But he takes this very seriously.

1933 – after discovering that the egg is fake, Zari and Nate come to the conclusion that Sara set them up, and this whole “mission” is a fake.  It’s then that they are discovered by Nazis and captured.  They’re still not convinced.

Sara joins Mona and Ava for their book club.  And as she’s about ready to chat about the book with the other two women, Mona gets a notice on her cellphone, indicating that Rebecca Silver will be making an appearance at the Romance Con.  Ava and Sara don’t let on that they know “Rebecca” is really Mick, but let her go anyway.  Just as Sara is back to wanting to talk about the book, Ava blows it off and says it was just a way to get some down time.  Sara feels cheated, and said she actually read (HEARD, honestly), the book.  Ava’s surprised, but allows Sara to talk about it.

Gary is going through the library, trying to find a book to get rid of Neron from Ray, but he’s not having any luck.  Neron nearly gets control of Ray to try and stab Gary, but Ray ends up stabbing himself to stop him.

Nate and Zari, captured, contact Ava and Sara, for which they say they know they were set up, and that the Nazis were a nice touch, but they’re onto her.  Sara says that it’s actually a REAL MISSION!  Nate and Zari quickly wise up. They’re about ready to do in Nate and Zari, when they break free using their powers to stop the Nazis.  Just then, Ava and Sara arrive to lend aid.  They talk about the egg, and who might have it, and Sara remembers the book she read, and figures out the assistant took it.  They go after the egg, and Nate goes to check in on Ray, whom they couldn’t communicate with.

Nate is back in the present, heading towards Ray’s lab, meanwhile, Neron is now trying to tempt Gary, by telling him that they don’t appreciate him, nor think highly of him.

Back at the Romance Con, Charlie is doing her best to keep up with what Mick told her they’d throw at her during the Q&A…then Mona shows up.  Mona is NOT buying the act….she recognizes Charlie.  She then grabs the mic to ask a question, and puts Charlie on the spot.  Mona is about ready to expose Charlie as a fake, until Mick decides to blow his cover and tell the audience HE is Rebecca Silver, and explains why.  He gets a standing ovation.

Constantine arrives back at the ship with a way to revive Nora.  He manages to bring her back, but she now realizes that Neron has Ray.  They’re off to the rescue.

Nate finally checks in on Ray, and Ray does his best to get Nate to take off, but to no avail.  Nate is there to stand by his buddy.  Neron takes control of Ray’s body, and attacks Nate.  He’s about ready to kill Nate, when Ray relents---and says he’ll give in, and let Neron have him.

Back in 1933 once again, and the three ladies manage to find the golden egg.  And, as Sara deduced, it was the assistant to took it.  A battle ensues with the Nazis, but the ladies manage to recover the egg, and bring it back to the Bureau.

Constantine is locked in battle with Neron once again, trying to separate him from Ray.  However, Neron continues to seduce Gary by telling him he can be whole again, and shows him the nipple he lost earlier in the season.  Constantine tries to tell Gary that it’s dead and possessed, and for him to get his act together…but Gary is tired of playing the idiot, so he takes the nipple and merges with it again.  He’s now with Neron.  Both him and Ray disappear, leaving John knocked out.  The ship, which had been offline due to Neron making sure Ray couldn’t contact anyone, comes back online.
The women arrive back at the ship, teasing Zari about Nate, when a wounded Nate appears.  Zari is concerned, and Nate tells them that Neron has Ray.

Nora has gotten a checkup, and is cleared.  She is approached by Ava, who says that they need her help in destroying Neron, and rescuing Ray.  Ava says she trusts Nora, and wants her to join the Bureau.  Nora’s in.

Sara calls a team meeting, and lets the rest of the crew know that Ray is possessed by Neron.

Zari and Nate manage a private moment, where they do express their feelings towards each other.  And they kiss.  They also decide to ask Gideon just what’s in the golden egg.  After a quick scan, Gideon reveals it’s a dragon egg.

____________________________________________

Another fun time with our time travelling band of misfits.  Again, this show has taken no quarter, and hasn’t given any either when they decided to throw the rule book out the window.  They’re having fun breaking all the rules, but they’re still telling some pretty cool stories.  It’s been a fun romp this season…but now things have taken a serious detour the last few episodes.  Don’t get me wrong…we’re still getting the humor and camp, but now they stakes for our heroes are just a tad higher as we head into the last couple of episodes of the season.

Ray’s mistakes are certainly coming back to bite him in the ass pretty hard.  Interfering in what should’ve been Neron’s destruction, only allowed Neron to find a new host---Ray himself.  And despite Ray’s attempts to stop him, when Neron said he would force Ray to kill someone he loved in order to obtain his soul, who would’ve thought it would be his best friend Nate?  But, there it was, so Ray made the ultimate sacrifice…himself.  And…Neron got a two-fer when he got Gary as well.  Ray will now have to be saved by the team before Neron can have him completely.  I’m sure Ray’s still in there, trying to find a way to fight.  As for Gary?  Hard to say.  He might be a sacrificial stooge for Neron.  Just another toy to use and toss away.

Nora has gotten redemption this year, I feel.  For someone who was possessed with her father’s bloodlust, to turning herself in to pay for her crimes, to nearly destroying Neron, to now having to rescue Ray as an official part of the team, she’s come full circle.  It’s good to see, because her power is SEVERELY needed for this last couple of episodes.

We see the relationships take some stage time this episode, as we see more sweet and comical moments between Sara and Ava, as well as the new budding romance of Nate and Zari.  The whole “Indiana Jones” theme for the time travel portion of the episode was just good enough for Nate to fill, as well as give and excuse for Zari to be dressed up in Marion Ravenwood’s white dress.  But now we have THOSE romances on the team….will we finally see Ray and Nora?  Guess we’ll find out.

Mick’s cover blown by Mona of all people at the Romance Con.  Sometimes, that impish woman can be a pain, but she’s comical in that sense.  For all Mick (and Charlie) did to keep his identity as Rebecca Silver secret, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as the fans ate it up.  And hey…the man can’t argue---he’s $25K richer…right?

This series has taken quite a turn from its initial premise when it started a few years back, and it’s the one show on DC’s slate that doesn’t take itself too seriously.  Which is good, considering the heavy drama we often get on ARROW and THE FLASH.  SUPERGIRL has some serious exposition going on this season, so it’s nice to kind of let your hair down when watching LEGENDS.

That’s it for this week.  Just another episode or two to go, and we’re off for the summer break.  As always, please subscribe and pass the good word along.  And hey….leave a comment!  I’d love to know what YOU think!

Until next time…
