REVIEW: THE FLASH –
SEASON 5, EPISODE 10 : "The Flash & The Furious"
After a little holiday break, the Scarlet Speedster is back
and ready to continue protecting Central City from the threat of Cicada and
anyone else looking to cause havoc to our beloved city. And we hit the ground running, so-to-speak.
Starting off in 2049, we pick up where we left off, as Nora
and Thawne have their little chat. Nora,
now with the knowledge that Eobard was the cause of her namesake grandmother’s
death, lets him know that he’s lucky that she’s talking to him at all, now that
she has the truth. Eobard then tells her
that, yes, he was responsible, and that he’ll always hate Barry Allen, as Barry
hates him. But he reminds Nora of what
HE has given HER---speed lessons. Time with her Dad…to be able to fight crime
with him. Eobard feels that he does NOT
want his actions to be his legacy. Nora,
however, doesn’t trust him anymore, and says that they will NOT be chatting
anymore.
Our villain-of-the-week is a gal named Raya Van Zant…who
goes by the name of Silver Ghost. She
apparently has a piece of satellite shard that allows her to control vehicles
and other things with engines. She ends up stealing a Lamborghini, and began
evading the cops. Meanwhile, Cecile is back
on the job in the courtroom, where Weather Witch is on trial. Barry is the CSI and witness for the
case. But he gets the call from STAR to
investigate the matter. Off he goes to
give chase. He and Nora are off and
running to try and catch her. As Barry
approaches the car…he’s hit by the dark matter, and is blasted away. Silver Ghost escapes, and Barry finds out he
has another problem. When trying to nab
Raya, he was vibrating…now he can’t STOP.
Nora manages to use her powers to help keep him solidified until she can
get him back to the lab.
At the lab, Caitlin is working on Cisco’s hands, and manages
to remove most of, if not all the shards from his hands. After doing some research, Cisco finds out
that the shards weren’t dampening his powers, but taking them AWAY. He chats with Caitlin about the possibility
of a “metahuman cure”. Caitlin tells him
that while she was against Killer Frost at first, when she was gone, Caitlin
felt lost without her. Cisco tells
Caitlin he wants to someday have a family, not risk his life day to day like
Barry does. He doesn’t want to be the
Flash.
Barry and Nora arrive, and in order to help Barry from
stopping his vibrating, he get him to vibrate into the pipeline. There, his powers are dampened, and is
immobile for awhile. At this time, he’s
SUPPOSED to give his deposition for Weather Witch’s case, but Nora, who IS
certified as a CSI, goes in his stead.
At the courthouse, Cecile can “feel” the regret in Weather Witch, but
Nora, through her testimony, says that she is a criminal, and SHE was
responsible for using the weapon to hurt people. At this point, Weather Witch confesses to her
crimes. She is then taken into custody
to serve her time in jail. Cecile
wonders why Nora was so harsh, and Nora explains that she is a criminal, and
they don’t change.
While Weather Witch is on her way to Iron Heights, Silver
Ghost catches up to the caravan delivering her, and breaks her out. Ghost then takes her to her hideout, and says
that she has plans to break into ARGUS, and needs Weather Witch to do it. Witch is reluctant to do so, saying she isn’t
like her father, that HE is the career criminal. Ghost reminds her that SHE is a criminal now,
and can’t avoid it. Ghost leaves her and
tells her to think on it.
Back at the lab, Iris, Nora, and the others are looking into
Silver Ghost’s past, and find out that she was set up by the DoD, and was
dishonorably discharged from the military.
They also find out she had no affiliation to Jocelyn. At this time, Jocelyn meets up with XS, and
she turns herself in. She wants no part
of Ghost’s plan. As XS takes her to the
station, where they arrest her. Despite
her protests, she’s taken away. Iris
notices and hears her protests. We later
see Iris getting the information she was looking for about Raya from a member of
the military. Nora and Iris chat about
Joc, and Iris lets her know that Barry has always given people a second
chance. Nora ponders on this. They managed to get all the info on Raya, and
find out she’s planning to raid ARGUS.
In the Pipeline, Barry is brought food by Sherloque, and he
brings up the writing that Barry was doing after he came out of the Speed
Force. Barry only remembers bits and
pieces, but he calls it something of a “future language”, and he couldn’t
figure out…not even Gideon, which gives Sherloque pause. He asks Sherloque why, but Sheloque just
passes it off as whimsy.
Jocelyn is in her jail cell when she’s approached by Raya,
who says she’s giving her a second chance, and lets her out of her cell. She also has with her Jocelyn’s staff. The two then head to ARGUS to steal an engine
produced by Wayne Tech. Turns out to be
a souped up Chevy Chevelle. They steal
it, and off they go. The team gets a hit
that the Ghost and Witch are on the loose, and XS is on the case, taking Killer
Frost in tow. XS is there to meet the
ladies when they are escaping, but they shoot a missle at her, that XS sees,
but it blows up in her face just before it passes her by, knocking her
down. They drive on, and meet up with
Frost, who has created an ice wall to stop them. But apparently, this vehicle is pretty much “Batmobile
Light”, as they phase through the ice wall, and continue their escape. The car also is capable of cloaking (Man,
leave it to Bruce to make a car with all the fixin’s). They disappear to avoid XS, and Cisco and
Iris can’t track them unless Joc uses her staff. At this point, XS tries again to appeal to
Joc, and let her know she made a mistake, and is giving her a chance to be the
person she WANTS to be. They are headed
right for XS when the road ices up beneath them, and they slide to a stop. Frost soon joins XS, and XS thanks her for
icing the road to stop them. Frost says
she didn’t do it, and XS realizes it was Jocelyn that saved her. However, both Weather Witch and Silver Ghost
escape.
Back at the lab, the 24 hours are up for Barry, and the Dark
Matter in his body has dissipated. Barry
is grateful to be out of the pipeline, and apologizes for not being able to
help. Cecile is happy he’s okay, and
says they’ll be back on the job tomorrow.
Barry and Iris realize that raising a kid is tough, but they love it.
Cisco is busy working on an equation to help him solve the
metagene. He’s hit with a heavy
overcoat, as Caitlin tells him it’s cold where they’re going. They breach to her Dad’s old lab. She tells him she’ll help him find a cure—for
HIM. But they work TOGETHER, and it’s
for him.
In 2049, Nora once again visits Eobard. He tells her she either trusts him or she
doesn’t, but she has to decide then and there.
She says she doesn’t trust him, but will give him time to prove
himself. Time, he tells her, is
something he has very precious of, as we see a clock, counting down how much
time he has left.
_________________________________________________________________________
Wow! What a way to
bring us back from our little Winter’s nap!
Now we see just what in the hell is going on with Nora and Eobard. He’s taken the same road with her as he did
with Barry…teaching her how to use her speed, and letting her spend time with
her Dad…which is all she wanted. But
now, as she has found out that HE was responsible for her grandmother’s death,
she’s less trusting---and deservedly so.
I do not know what Eobard’s plan is, but I’ve no doubt that it’s not
good. As much as he says he doesn’t want
his legacy to be that of the “evil villain”, we all know that he cannot change
that. As long as Nora Allen’s death was
at his hands, that will NEVER change.
And we also know that’s a pivotal point in the Flash’s history that
CANNOT be changed. It is a set point in
time. Nora is still such a naïve child
in so many ways, and we will see if this will end up having serious
consequences down the road.
Nora learns a valuable lesson about second chances, as Barry
told her about Captain Cold, and how he went from being a virtual career
criminal to a Legend. All Jocelyn wanted
was a chance to prove she was NOT her father, a career criminal. At first, Nora was reluctant to give her a
second chance, even when Cecile could sense her guilt, and later on, as she’s
crying out that she turned herself in willingly, Iris overhearing it. In the end, Nora herself needed a second
chance to show Joc that she was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt,
and Joc didn’t let her down. Later on,
we see that she was willing to let Eobard prove his worth, even though he seems
to be on the clock now.
Speaking of Eobard and being “on the clock”, I was curious
about that timer from the midseason finale a month ago, and now it makes more
sense. Eobard is dying. How long he has, and what he is suffering
from is still yet unexplained, but it seems like he’s looking to either turn
over a new leaf before he dies, or yet it’s another in a long set of well
crafted schemes he’s cooked up. We
should get more info on that as the story progresses.
Caitlin and Cisco’s teaming up to find a “metahuman cure”
seems like a good idea at first: to help
those afflicted with powers from Dark Matter like Cicada, and stop them before
they do something drastic. However,
Cisco is feeling the weight of being a superhero, and seeing how much Iris and
Nora worry every time Barry races out as the Flash to risk his life…it’s begun
to weigh on him as well. He wants a
normal life…to be the Cisco Ramon he was BEFORE becoming Vibe. And while Caitlin and Frost have come to
terms with the fact that they do need each other, Cisco is more interested in
being an average guy…well, average for Cisco, anyway. While they work on this “cure”, I have a
sneaking feeling it’s going to fall into the wrong hands. I see baaaad, baaaad things down the road
with this thing.
Was awesome to see Cecile get back into the swing of things,
now that she’s off maternity leave. She
wasn’t pleased Barry had to run off to go do his Flash thing (and, at this
juncture, she had BETTER be used to it!
It’s what you get when your head CSI is the Fastest Man Alive). Was also pretty cool we got our Joe update of
the week---he’s got Jenny, and hanging out with Wally (I bet THAT time---insert
joke—is being well spent, LOL!), but we can expect our patriarch and favorite
CCPD detective to be back on the job again soon---Jesse L. Martin has been
cleared to come back to work!
Silver Ghost was another “villain of the week”, but she had
something of a cool power---metatech that allowed her to control things with
engines. And for her to rip off ARGUS for
a high tech ride that they had from Wayne Tech (leave it to Wayne Enterprises
to create something that can elude the law, a speedster, and have all sorts of
Batmobile type gadgets), and make it a sweet ride like a Chevy Chevelle SS (and
the color and stripes reminding me an awful lot of the Shelby GT 500 used in
the 2000 version of the movie Gone In Sixty Seconds….Eleanor). And getting into ARGUS seems to get easier,
despite all their defense methods they implement. You’d think that with enough metahumans running
around, they’d get a clue. Good thing
about this villain---she’ll be back to plague Team Flash again. As for Jocelyn…our Weather Witch. Will she stay on the downlow? Or will she embrace her father’s life? Time will tell.
Mick Rory having been published---and Barry reading his book in captivity..and LIKIING IT...love it!
Mick Rory having been published---and Barry reading his book in captivity..and LIKIING IT...love it!
Finally, Sherloque’s quest to know all about Nora’s
activities, and the language she’s been writing down, have got him hot on her
trail. Him quizzing Barry about the
language, and Barry telling him he only knew bits and pieces, but couldn’t
decipher all of it…even with Gideon’s help, got his mind working overtime. Having ask Gideon about Nora’s records of her
journal, which he surmised, is what she was doing, and Gideon saying that the
records have been erased, will now have him working like crazy to uncover her
secret. For being as goofy as he’s
been---he’s proving to be every bit as deductive as the real Sherlock
Holmes.
Only drawback to this week’s installment? No Ralph.
Would like to see him open up his own detective agency…see him working
on a case. But I guess his lack of
appearances help to not make him stale…and be useless. He comes in when he’s useful, but it WOULD be
nice to know what’s been going on with HIS life while not hanging around Team
Flash.
All in all…not a bad way to come back from the break, and
get this story moving into the next gear.
It had its slight humorous moments, and we got a good chunk of answers
as to WHY Nora was working with Eobard.
There’s still more to come, but happy to have our speedster back on the
beat.
That’s all for this week!
Wanna give a shoutout to my friend Jocelyn, and her friends with whom
