REVIEW: DC'S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW - SEASON 4, EP. 7: "Oh Hell, Dolly!"
The fun and laughs just keep on coming for our heroes of the time-travelling seas, and this week was no different. As we dive into the world of the serial killer with a twist, Ray's new look, Mona's love life, and we also get some background on just what in the hell has been a plague to Constantine.
John is dreaming about his old friend when he is awakened by
Charlie, who shows him that her shapeshifting powers are coming back. John says
that it’s impossible. Charlie says she
survived her paranormal prisons by trading favors.
The Team is chatting in the kitchen, with Ray showing off
his instant mustache that he grew to impress Nora. While looking at a box of
cereal that talks about the worst cereal killers in American history, it turns
out a female is on the box that shouldn’t be there. Ava, who’s an avid fan of
reading about serial killers, says that the information is wrong. A man named
Mike The Spike was responsible for a slew of deaths of blonde women in that
time period. They have found their new case, and off they go to New Orleans in
the late 1856’s. In search of Marie Leveau
and Mike The Spike.
Mona is arriving at work, when she hits another employee’s
car. She feels guilty. She bumps into Gary, who does his WORST job
at impressing her. Nate tells Gary to
play it cool and be himself.
Just before the team arrives in New Orleans, they discuss
Marie Leveau, and how some of the murders happen. Apparently, they’re looking for someone the
news clippings say can walk through walls.
They arrive in the city, and John has a flashback to his friend in the
dream, and when Zari asks him what’s up, John just says he had a lot of
memories being in the city. John is captured.
John is found in a coffin.
He opens it up and is met by a voodoo priestess, who is looking for a
medallion that John has. John doesn’t
cooperate immediately, and she digs into his memories, and sees her great great
grandson, who had given the medallion to John to protect him from a demon who
was chasing him. Leveau wants John to
save her family, but John says he can’t.
Dez (her great great grandson and his lover), are gone. She demands it. Zari and Charlie find him. They ask her if she’s known of any other
magic in the area, and she talks about a spirit who possessed a doll. Leveau gives John the medallion back for
protection.
The team is on the search for the killer, but haven’t seen
them as yet. Ray heads into a room to
see a scared little girl. They wonder if
they’re looking for a killer doll, and Ray gets conked on the head by a sailor
doll. The doll threatens to kill Ray as
Sara shows up. The doll leaps at her
with a knife, trying to stab her, when she tosses it away, just in time for
Rory to blast it with his heat gun. They
question the charred doll, and the doll says that it’s their worst
nightmare. Rory blasts the doll again to
silence it. While all this is happening,
on the ship, John asks Charlie if she wants her shape shifting powers back.
We check in on the Bureau, where Mona is making the rounds,
and the caveman asks about her wound.
She sees he’s sad, and she steps through the barrier to comfort him and
asks what happened to him.
John and Charlie plot to save Dez. She imitates Amaya in order make sure John and Dez don't meet.
Mona and Nate chat, with Nate trying to be Gary’s wingman,
asks Mona if she’s dating anyone, and she says she likes someone…Gary is
following a distance to hear her say it’s him.
Mona doesn’t want to lose her job, and Nate says not to worry. So, she’s going to go for it. I think she’s thinking about the caveman.
Aboard the ship, Sara ties down Mr. Crispy Doll, and her and
Ava chat about Mick robbing the party blind, and Sara explains that Mick is
reliable, and a friend. Ava says they
should try to run a professional operation.
Sara says she’ll run her team her way, and Ava will run her team her
way. Before Ava heads back to the
Bureau, her and Sara grab a shower. As
they take off..we see the doll stir.
Aboard a time ship, John and Charlie hope they set things
right, only John gets another vision of meeting him a few days later. As they try to go back, Zari catches them and
brings them back to the Waverider. John
then talks about how his relationship with Dez happened. But then the demon Neron was chasing him, and
as it turns out, down the line, Dez is destined to die. Zari promises she will find a way to help
him.
Mona enters the caveman’s cell to make nice nice, and while
chatting, he senses a disturbance. The
alarms go off.
The spirit in the doll leaves and wanders the ship…looking
for its next host. Meanwhile, John and
Charlie talk, and John feels he needs to go back in time to prevent Dez from
falling for him.
Sara cooked to try and reach a peace deal between Ava and
Mick, but it doesn’t go over well. Ava
bashes Mick’s writing, and he bashes her cooking. Then she calls out his lack of hygene and sleeping
with a fictional three breasted woman, and he calls her a clone. Sara says he pushed it too far. Mick asks why she gets to have a fake
girlfriend, and he doesn’t. He calls her
a clone, Ava calls him a dick, and he walks off. NO ONE notices a small set of hands grabbing
for the knife on the tray.
Zari talks to John, and says that she can’t change that
moment in time. She tries to explain how
hard it is to want to change events but can’t.
However, she soon discovers that it’s Charlie shapeshifting to look like
John. Zari reads her the riot act about
being irresponsible about changing time.
Charlie says she’s aging and dying, and will continue to do so if she’s
stuck in her current body. Zari reminds
Charlie that if John fails, Zari will find a way to make Charlie’s life
miserable.
Sara and Ava commiserate and they notice something wrong in
the kitchen. They see footprints in the
flour on the floor. They know the doll
is alive. Suddenly, the lights go out.
Back at the Bureau, the guards subdue the caveman, and warns
Mona off from being spotted.
Zari and Charlie are chasing John, and John tells them how
Neron took over Dez’s body, and had sent Neron to hell, but took Dez with
him. John is trying to change that. Zari offers help, but he says he must go it
alone. Their last day begins to play out.
The spirit is roaming about the ship, and Ava and Mick head
to the lab where the scorched doll is.
Suddenly, another doll attacks Ava and slices her leg. It’s the Stein puppet! She falls down, and the doll attacks
her. Mick knocks the doll away, and Ava
thanks him for the save. The spirit
disappears through the ventilation.
At the Bureau, the guards capture the caveman, and start
beating him. Mona steps in to prevent
them, but she gets knocked down, the caveman breaks his bonds and attacks
them. Mona suggests he should go.
John is back with Dez, and lies to him about being in love
with him, saying he cast a spell on him.
John breaks it off with Dez and leaves.
He sees the medallion disappear, thus changing history. Just as Zari and Charlie close in on John,
there’s a rift in the timestream. Back
on the ship, the team battles the Stein Puppet that is possessed by Mike The
Spike, and just as they fight him down, things stop midstream. Everyone is frozen in place. After a brief moment, things pick up
again. Charlie gets her shapeshifting
powers back, but she soon discovers Zari’s been turned into a cat, and everyone
else is wondering just what in the hell is going on.
_________________________________________________________________________
This episode took a couple of interesting twists we had not really gotten much of this season, only touched upon.
Constantine's life seemed to be the big focus of this week's show, as we finally get some background on just what the hell's been bugging his dreams. Seems he had fallen for a man named Desmond--who--coincidentally, was Marie Laveau's great great grandson. Who knew that John could be a little softy? For a guy that tries to be such a hard-ass, it's good to see a little more depth to him by having some semblance of a heart. However, John has not yet learned the Barry Allen cardinal rule of time: some things are just set in stone, and you can't change them, no matter HOW hard you try, and no matter the noble intentions. The team will now have to fix the damage John's caused with his stunt for love.
Ava and Mick being at odds because Ava took the Book of Inspiration away led to some serious animosity that Sara had to put that fire out, so-to-speak. Sara really couldn't resolve the matter, even with food (which she couldn't cook a lick---thanks, Gideon!). Micks swipe to Sara about her being allowed a fake girlfriend, but he wasn't was extremely low...even for him. That was the harshest moment of the night. But, they still managed to work together when dealing with the killer spirit of Mike The Spike. Ava still has some lightening up to do, and Mick needs to learn to pull his punches (but we know he won't---otherwise, he wouldn't be Mick).
I have to hand it to Brandon Routh---for a guy who played Superman about as straightforward and Christopher Reeve like....dude has a SERIOUS funnybone. His time as Ray Palmer is one of the gifts that keep on giving in this show. He IS the team's heart and soul, make no mistake. He's the lovable brother who's goofy and geeky as hell, but reliable, loyal, and good to have around when you need him. His pornstache to impress Nora was just funny, and seeing it half shaven off was even sillier. But the man has serious comic chops, and they're on full display here.
Zari and Charlie working together is something that we know each other DOES not like, as Zari...outside of Sara...has become something of a mother hen of the team. She combines the power of Amaya, but has the responsibility of Nate and Sara. Charlie wants to cut loose, but leave it to Zari to find a way to rein her in just enough. Their dynamic tries to come off like oil and vinegar, but it's a lot more peanut butter and jelly---they work well together.
I am honestly not sure what in the hell they're doing with Mona. Is she just complete comic relief? What is her deal? And why are we getting this Tarzan/Jane type romance with her and the caveman guy? I swear...between her, Nate's bouts of silliness, and just....ALL of Gary....I'm amazed the Bureau hasn't been blown to smithereens or melted to the ground. It's like watching the Three Stooges, only without them punching, gouging, and smacking each other. I have to wonder just what long term plans they have for her?
I guess with all the weird and wonderful tributes we've gotten this season with our monsters...why not go all Child's Play? It just seemed appropriate. Again, this show is off center, and that's where it needs to be. It continues to wink at the audience, while telling a story with SOME drama in it, a lot of action, and just plain fun. It's also a good thing they're not part of this year's Elseworlds crossover event---they've gotten enough strange realities on their own---to squeeze them into such an event would've proven difficult at best. But that's okay---they're perfect right where they're at---trying to fix the timestream itself. I've no doubt they'll bump into their fellow Arrowverse partners, but until then...we get to enjoy the ride they're on, and laughing and slapping our knees all the way.
Okay, that does it for this blog, and a quick note: Midseason finale is next week, and this is the one show that will be on a LOOONG hiatus. So, what they left in the cliffhanger this week, should be resolved next week, and prepare us for the final stretch of this 13 episode season next year. I do want to thank ALL of you who have subscribed and read my blogs....I'm TOTALLY appreciative! Please comment if you want, and don't forget to tell anyone else about the blog---that'd be super cool!
Same Time, Next Week!
